Next Generation Power: Enhancing System Performance

Bryn Parry
CEO, Amantys

Power Channels: Motion Control, Power Components, Switch-Mode Power

In every industry, innovation must drive product development; within the power electronics industry, this is no different. The power electronics industry continues to face intense pressure for greater reliability and efficiency, driven by the need to reduce costs and meet carbon reduction targets. This comes at a time when the world economy is facing its toughest challenge in decades and the global population passes seven billion people, fuelling an accelerating appetite for more energy.

Amantys represents the next generation of power electronics organisations, with a vision to transform the design, implementation and control of power electronic systems. It aims to change the way that power is switched. By enhancing system performance with power switching control and monitoring, it enables designers to work from the heart of the system and by doing so simplifies the integration of IGBTs, MOSFETs and newer technologies in medium and high voltage applications.

Amantys has been working hard over the past 12 months to drive new product development through its technology offering. Creating reliable products has been a priority; with the Amantys Power Drive family now complete with 3.3kV, 1.7kV & 1.2kV IGBT Module Gate Drives.

The latest technology breakthrough has been with its Power Insight™ product, delivering real-time power switch performance metrics through the existing control interface. This technology was developed with the engineer in mind, it enables the export of six key measurements from the gate driver including Vce, switching time and gate drive temperature. In addition it allows remote configuration of both the gate drive resistors and the alarm limits, all whilst carrying out post-failure diagnosis on events such as over temperature and short circuits.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
