Former Altair Nanotechnologies CEO Joins Xtreme Power as CTO
Xtreme Power (XP), developer and manufacturer of Dynamic Power Resource™ (DPR™) utility-scale energy storage and digital power management systems, announced the appointment of Alan J. Gotcher, Ph.D. as Chief Technology Officer. In his new role, Dr. Gotcher will oversee research and development activities as well as formulate long-term visions and strategies to drive the continued adoption of Xtreme Power’s DPR technology by utilities and independent power producers.
"Alan’s 25 years of leadership with material science companies and successful track record of introducing disruptive battery technologies positioned for rapid adoption are critical to supporting XP’s strategic direction and growth," said Carlos Coe, CEO of Xtreme Power. "His thought leadership and deep technical expertise are invaluable as Xtreme Power continues to secure market share, expand its team and deliver on projects; we are happy to welcome him on board."
Dr. Gotcher has an exceptional track record in product and business development, as well as driving significant revenue growth, in the energy storage and material science sectors. From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Gotcher served as President, CEO and Director for energy storage and power product company Altair Nanotechnologies Inc., where he focused on setting the company’s vision and growth strategy and developed key partnerships with several Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Gotcher also has experience leading, developing and managing companies’ intellectual property portfolios, consisting of more than 350 U.S. patents.
"Xtreme Power is winning large-scale, cost-competitive commercial storage projects, and the company’s advanced technology has all the characteristics sought by a variety of end users," said Xtreme Power CTO Alan Gotcher, Ph.D. "This is an especially exciting time for Xtreme Power, and I look forward to contributing to and leading a team of dedicated innovators as we develop new, creative ideas for advancing XP’s energy storage and digital power management systems to transform the global power market."
Xtreme Power’s DPR technology is a fully integrated energy storage and power management solution that efficiently works to manage existing power resources and integrate renewable energy into the grid. It combines key digital power management components into a utility-scale energy storage system that operates seamlessly with existing or planned infrastructure. The company’s commercial projects in development and operation include the world’s largest storage-integrated wind farm in partnership with Duke Energy, as well as providing the energy storage component for the Tres Amigas SuperStation, a massive project connecting America’s three major power grids. In support of these and other projects, Xtreme Power is aggressively hiring 30 top-talent engineers and scientists for its Kyle, Texas location.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
