OMRON Acquires Chinese Power Latching Relay Manufacturer

Power Channels: Smart Grid Power

OMRON Corp. announced that OMRON (China) Co., Ltd. (OMRON’s China Group Head Office) and Shanghai Best Electrical Appliance Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (BST) entered into an equity transfer agreement under which OMRON (China) will acquire a 100% stake in BST. BST is a manufacturer of power latching relays in China.

According to the companies, in smart grids, which are expected to see a rapid increase in demand, smart meters will become a mainstay device as an interface for connecting power grids with commercial buildings or individual homes. Load switching units for directly controlling the supply of power to smart meters employ power latching relays.

According to the companies, in China, where smart meters are now in the introductory stage, power latching relays for smart meters have high growth potential. In fact, power latching relay sales in China are expected to account for about 65% (quantity basis) of worldwide sales by fiscal 2015, growing into a 15-20 billion yen business.

BST states that it commands the leading position in the Chinese market for power latching relays, with a share of approximately 30%. The company also says that it has also gained a competitive advantage through its high-mix, low-volume production system and by enhancing productivity through the use of modular parts.

Aiming to further expand and strengthen its relay business, OMRON looks to make a quick entry into China, a new high-growth market for power latching relays, and secure a robust competitive position. Through the acquisition of BST, OMRON will aim for sales of 5 billion yen for power latching relays in 2015 through synergy of both companies’ strengths.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
