Emerson Intros Liebert Type SS Series TVSS Systems

April 27, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (St. Louis, MO), introduced the Liebert Type SS Series, a new line of transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) systems that utilize a hybrid approach to protect communications devices and other electronic systems from damage and downtime from power surges. It is suitable for cell sites, communication shelters, transmitters, and base stations, particularly those involved in emergency service.

The Liebert Type SS combines silicon avalanche diode (SAD) and metal-oxide varsitor (MOV) protection in a single cabinet. When subjected to a damaging high-energy transient surge, the device shifts from fast-responding SAD technology to the energy-absorbing MOV technology to prolong the life of the SAD module. The Liebert Type SS includes N+1 redundancy to handle maximum surges, and provides up to 400 kA of surge current capacity per mode.

The Type SS Series is available in three versions: the Type 1A Hybrid TVSS designed for high-vulnerability areas, which contains 500 J of SAD protection and 5,000 J of MOV protection; the Type 1 Hybrid TVSS designed for moderate-vulnerability areas, which contains 250 J of SAD protection and 5,000 J of MOV protection; and the Type 2 MOV only TVSS designed for low-vulnerability areas, which contains 5,000 J of MOV protection. Each device is covered by a 10-year parts and five-year on-site labor warranty.
