Intersil Intros ISL6592/ISL6595 Digital Multiphase Controllers

November 10, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Intersil Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced two new six-phase, digital controllers with I2C bus communication, the ISL6592 voltage regulator (VR10.X) and the ISL6595 (VR11.0) controller, which offer active transient response (ATR) that reduces the number of output capacitors by as much as 50 percent compared to non-ATR systems. Applications for the ISL6592 and ISL6595 include Intel and AMD servers; high-end graphics cards; small form factor voltage regulator modules (VRMs); and intelligent, multi-phase point-of-load (POL) modules.

The ISL6592 and ISL6595 offer ATR control modes that result in high-bandwidth/low-output-capacitance designs, as well as a digitally calibrated on-state resistance current-sense feature for high load-line accuracy, and an I2C communication interface that enables programming and monitoring of the power system. Additional features of the ISL6595 include an integrated temperature sensor and digital temperature load line compensation, six-bit voltage identification codes, dual-edge clocking, and digital current balancing.

The ISL6594x and ISL6596 are high-frequency MOSFET drivers designed to drive upper and lower power n-channel MOSFETs in a digital, synchronous rectified, buck converter topology. The drivers, combined with the ISL6592 or ISL6595 digital controllers and n-channel MOSFETs, form a complete core-voltage regulator solution for advanced microprocessors.

The ISL6592 and ISL6595 are available now in a 48-pin, LQFP lead-free package, and are priced at $2.75 in 1,000-unit quantities.
