19: Leading Chinese Car Makers Display Qi Wireless Charging Standard
Opinion: Maximising Synergies between Power Electronics and ICT for improving Energy Efficiency
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced that leading Chinese automobile manufacturers Geely, Chery, Changan and Dongfeng exhibited cars featuring its universal wireless charging standard Qi. This is the first time that embedded Qi wireless chargers have been exhibited in concept vehicles, marking a key milestone for universal wireless charging technology.

18: Cosel Introduces Streamlined AC-DC Switching Power Supplies
Cosel Co. Ltd. launched its 300 & 600W, ac-dc switching power supply PLA series. The company states that its PLA Series is as reliable series as its existing high end PBA Series, the difference being that the cost profile in this series is substantially reduced. Cosel claims that for many applications such as LED sign, automation and test equipment, the cost savings is dramatic.

17: Phihong Develops Dongle to Power Cisco AP1250
Phihong has developed a splitter that enables powering of a Cisco AP1250 wireless access point using Phihong’s IEEE802.3at-compliant enterprise class multiport midspans. Designated the ACCY125X-R, the dongle works as a traditional splitter by taking IEEE802.3at PoE and splitting off the data via Ethernet cable while continuing the 56V power feed through a dc cable.

16: Maxwell Introduces Ultracapacitor-Based Backup Power Module for UPS Systems
Maxwell Technologies, Inc. announced that it is introducing a 56V ultracapacitor module designed specifically to address the short-term ride-through and bridge power requirements of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems for mission-critical installations such as data centers, hospitals, factories and telecommunication facilities.

15: O2Micro USB Charger Selected by Leading Camcorder OEM
O2Micro International Ltd. announced that its USB Charger (OZ8070) integrated circuit (IC) is in production in an industry-leading customer’s new Camcorder application.

14: TDK-EPC Announces PhaseCap Compact PFC Capacitors With Extended Voltage Range
TDK-EPC, a group company of the TDK Corp., has extended its range of power factor correction (PFC) capacitors: the EPCOS PhaseCap® Compact series now also includes types with voltages of 690, 800, 900 and 1000V. The capacitors of the B25673AA series offer PFC values of between 5 kvar (50 Hz) and 33 kvar (60 Hz) at capacitance values of between 3 x 11 and 3 x 55µF. Thanks to their compact design with diameters of only 116 and 136mm at insertion heights of 164 and 200mm, these capacitors are particularly useful for designing space-saving PFC systems for industrial networks.

13: Cree Launches First Commercial Silicon Carbide Power MOSFET
In a move that the company says heralds a performance revolution in energy efficient power electronics, Cree, Inc. has introduced what it says is the industry’s first fully-qualified commercial silicon carbide power MOSFET. Cree states that this establishes a new benchmark for energy efficient power switches and can enable design engineers to develop high voltage circuits with extremely fast switching speeds and ultralow switching losses.

12: Wurth Electronics Dual Coil Combines High Common & Differential Mode Impedance for LED Lamps
Wurth Electronics Midcom, a designer and manufacturer of custom magnetic components, created the Dual Coil series of common mode chokes with high dual impedance capabilities – in what the company says is the smallest package size on the market today. The Dual Coil series of common mode chokes offer what the company describes as a cost-effective solution for suppression of common mode and differential mode impedance at low frequencies, ranging from 10kHz to 100MHz. The dual feature eliminates the need for multiple components, which saves cost on the bill of materials and space on the printed circuit board.

11: Micro Power Announces Iron Phosphate Battery for Replacement of Sealed Lead Acid Batteries
Micro Power announced IronWorks™, a patent pending Iron Phosphate battery solution, which serves as a drop-in replacement for Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries. According to the company, manufacturers of mobile equipment can now achieve lighter weight, longer runtime, faster charge time and longer cycle life with this new standard U1 format battery. IronWorks is based on Lithium Iron Phosphate, described as the company as the safest and most environmentally friendly chemistry available on the market today.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.
