Green Building Power Forum Program Expanded to Include Vice Chairman, Galvin Electricity Initiative, and Former EPRI CEO
Exclusive
The program at the 2012 Green Building Power Forum (GBPF ’12) has been expanded to include a panel discussion featuring Kurt Yeager, Vice Chairman, Galvin Electricity Initiative and former President and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Brian Fortenberry, Program Manager, EPRI, Jeff Shepard, President, Darnell Group, Karl Johnson, Research Coordinator, California Institute for Energy & Environment, and BJ Sonnenberg, Business Development Manager, Emerson. This discussion on "DC Market Outlook" will be moderated by Brian Patterson, Chairman, EMerge Alliance.
That is only one of the high-power, high-impact and high-energy sessions that will be part of GBPF ’12. The program at GBPF ’12 will be the broadest and deepest discussion ever on the emerging opportunities in dc building power. In addition to the panel described above, speakers will represent Anderson Power Products, Armstrong Industries, Bloom Energy, Delta Products, Duke Energy, Emerson Electric, Eutricity, Fujitsu Components, Laurence Berkeley National Laboratory, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Nextek Power, Oakridge National Labs, Pike Research, Roal, Underwriters Laboratories, Universal Electric and University of Texas.
"This is a dynamic period in the development of dc power distribution. EMerge Alliance-compliant products are on the market, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute has issued a 400Vdc standard, the International Electrotechnical Commission has established an active project to develop global dc-powering standards, there are a growing number of dc-powered data centers around the world and dc-microgrids are being deployed across Asia. DC building power technology has reached the end of the development stage and has started the commercialization process. Darnell’s Green Building Power Forum is the only place where global thought leaders gather on an annual basis to assess progress and plan next steps," said Jeff Shepard, president, Darnell Group.

The EMerge Alliance is a Diamond Sponsor of GBPF ’12. This focused three-day international conference will serve an audience of decision-makers who are interested in learning about and contributing to the latest practical advancements related to the use of dc power distribution in commercial, industrial, government and residential buildings; critical facilities such as data centers; and the creation of a dynamic power infrastructure.
A convergence of technologies is occurring that will change how buildings are powered. These technologies include the continued rapid growth of distributed generation resources (photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, fuel cells, micro turbines, etc.), the emergence of high-efficiency lighting technologies (especially solid-state LED lighting), wireless building automation systems, demand-side management of building energy use by electric utilities, and so on.
Opinion: Maximising Synergies between Power Electronics and ICT for improving Energy Efficiency
Examples of the topics to be addressed at GBPF ’12 include: Selection of the optimal dc distribution voltage; Integration of distributed generation resources; DC lighting systems; DC HVAC and other building systems; DC appliances; Building automation and controls; DC microgrids; Combined heat and power; Advanced components and hardware; Safety considerations; Standardization issues; Hybrid ac and dc power distribution architectures; Implementation of demand-side management; Implications for power quality; and more.
Darnell Group is the leading source for worldwide strategic information covering the full spectrum of power electronics, energy storage and generation. The company specializes in the economic/business analysis of emerging power markets and technologies. The GBPF ’12 program is here.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
