Vishay Releases New Series of Surface-Mount TransZorb TVS in SlimSMA Package

Power Channels: Power Components

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. introduced a new series of surface-mount TransZorb® transient voltage suppressors (TVS) in the SlimSMA™ DO-221AC package. SMA6F series devices offer a very low profile of 0.95 mm, high surge capability to 600 W at 10/1000µs and 4kW at 8/20µs, and excellent clamping capability.

The TVS devices released today are 50% thinner than devices in the traditional SMA package yet are footprint-compatible and offer 50% higher surge capability at 10/1000 µs. The SMA6F series’ low clamping voltages of 9.2 to 31.4 at 10/1000µs and 13.4 to 36.8 at 8/20µs are 3 to 9% lower than current TVS devices in the SMB package.

With their compact size, SMA6F TVS are designed to protect sensitive electronics against voltage transients induced by inductive load switching and lightning in space-constrained consumer, computer, industrial, and telecommunication applications. Typical end products include hard disks, hot-swap computer and telecom cards, and slim LCD TVs and monitors.

The SMA6F series consists of 16 TVS devices with stand-off voltages from 5 to 20V. The devices offer a temperature range from -55 to + 175, provide ESD capability of 15 kV (air) and 8kV (contact) in accordance to IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4, and meet the MSL Level 1 standard, per -STD-020, LF maximum peak of 260°C.

Well suited for automated placement, the TVS devices are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.

Opinion: Unraveling the Ultra-Low Power Design Issues

Samples and production quantities of the new SMA6F series are available now, with lead times of eight weeks for large orders. Pricing for U.S. delivery is $0.25 per piece.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
