Alpha and Omega Semi Introduces New 100V Medium Voltage MOSFET for Telecom Power Applications
Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS) announced the release of AON6290, the flagship device in its new 100V AlphaMOS™ (αMOS™) medium voltage portfolio. The new product expands AOS’ medium voltage MOSFET portfolio and enhances its solutions for high performance power supplies. The AON6290 is well suited for a wide range of applications that are pushing the limits of efficiency such as secondary side synchronous rectification in dc-dc and ac-dc converters, primary side and secondary side switching in telecom and industrial dc-dc converters, and POL modules for telecom systems.
AON6290 combines what the company says is industry-leading on-resistance with fast switching performance. The on-resistance of this device is 68% lower than the previous generation of products and is said to be 5% lower than the leading 100V device found in the market today. Furthermore, AOS says that the AON6290 delivers excellent switching performance with key figure-of-merits for RDS(ON) Qg, RDS(ON) CISS and RDS(ON) COSS that are 5, 3, and 50% better than the current leading competitor, respectively. The benefit of this performance is that power supply designers do not need to compromise switching performance in order to reap the benefits of low on-resistance. These devices are available in a compact size DFN5x6 green package and are 100% Rg and UIS tested.
"Switching and conduction performance both need to be optimized in power designs in order to maximize total system efficiency." said Stephen Chang, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at AOS. "AON6290 delivers the best of both worlds with industry-leading RDS(ON) in combination with low gate charge, input capacitance, and output capacitance."
The AON6290 is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12-14 weeks. The unit price for 10,000 pieces is $1.184.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
