Fairchild Semiconductor Expands PowerTrench MOSFET Family
Fairchild Semiconductor announced the expansion of the PowerTrench® MOSFET family. Part of the mid-voltage power MOSFET portfolio, these devices are optimized power switches that combine a small gate charge (QG), a small reverse recovery charge (Qrr) and a soft-reverse recovery body diode, allowing for fast switching speeds. Available in a 40, 60 and 80V rating, these devices require less power dissipation in the snubber circuitry due to an optimized soft-body diode that the company says reduces voltage spikes by up to 15 percent over the competitor’s solution.
Employing a shielded-gate silicon technology that provides charge balance, the devices achieve higher power density, low ringing and better light-load efficiency. By using this technology, the devices achieve a lower figure of merit (QG x RDS(ON)) while reducing driving loss to increase power efficiency.
The first devices available include the 40V FDMS015N04B and 80V FDMS039N08B available in a Power56 package, and the 60V FDP020N06B and 80V FDP027N08B available in a TO-220 3-lead package.
The units are priced (in 1,000 quantity pieces) as follows: FDMS015N04B at $1.78; FDMS039N08B at $1.60; at FDP020N06B at $4.50; and FDP027N08B at $3.30; with a delivery of 8-12 weeks ARO.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
