KEMET Introduces New Line of Polymer COTS Capacitors

Power Channels: Power Components

KEMET Corp. introduced its extensive new line of polymer Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) capacitors. The T543 Series offers over 300 discrete part numbers not including termination, ESR and surge current options. This extensive offering provides designers with the tools necessary to customize their capacitance solutions and maximize application performance.

"The features of the T543 Series will allow our customers to use up to 90% fewer capacitors, providing the lowest cost solution for power management," said Dr. Philip Lessner, KEMET Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Scientist. "Low ESR characteristics and outstanding power dissipation results in ripple current that is three times higher than the equivalent MnO2 capacitor."

The T543 Polymer COTS Series utilizes the designs of KEMET’s commercial polymer product with the addition of 24 hours minimum of voltage conditioning and surge current options at +25 and -55/+85°C," stated Ed Jones, KEMET Specialty Tantalum Product Manager. "This upscreening, combined with a benign failure mode, assures the design community of long term reliability and worry-free performance."

Typical applications include radar pulse capacitor, point of load supply and switch mode power supply in the computer, industrial, defense and telecommunications markets. Pricing ranges from $1.00 to $7.00.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
