Perpetuum Develops Intelligent Energy Harvester Power Module in Partnership with Emerson
Perpetuum Ltd. in a collaborative effort with Emerson Rosemount announces the availability of an Intelligent Energy Harvester power module option for Emerson Rosemount 3051S Smart Wireless transmitters. The Intelligent Power Module offers a compact and technologically advanced power option which has the same form factor as the Emerson battery pack. It will enable the Emerson Rosemount 3051S to be powered by Vibration Energy Harvesters (also known as Vibration Energy Scavengers) thus eliminating the cost and logistics challenges associated with changing batteries.

Until now, Automation OEMs and end users have been limited primarily to "battery only" power options for their wireless industrial transmitters. Fast data capture rates or large amounts of collected data (e.g. vibration) can create the unnecessary maintenance logistics of having to change batteries in deployed wireless sensor nodes long before the useful life cycle of the transmitter is achieved.
Replacing batteries creates significant losses in productivity, money, time and human resources as well as un-optimized maintenance logistics associated with scheduling, work order generation, stocking and hazardous material disposal.

By utilizing Perpetuum's Vibration Energy Harvesting power option end users can eliminate the need to change batteries for over 10 years. Savings are even greater for "prioritized" assets (those requiring the fastest data capture rates), remote locations and hazardous or safety restricted areas.
Perpetuum's Intelligent Power Module has been designed so that it is compatible with other forms of energy harvesting (e.g. thermal) when they become available and qualified for use.
Opinion: Maximising Synergies between Power Electronics and ICT for improving Energy Efficiency
Perpetuum will be unveiling its Vibration Harvester Intelligent Power Module at the Emerson Global Users Exchange in Anaheim, CA. October 8-10 in the Technology Exhibits center Booth 214 and will be presenting examples of the benefits in real deployments. Paper presentations detailing the operation and benefits of the Perpetuum Intelligent Power Module (Session ID: 12-2158) will be presented on Tuesday 9 October at 2:00pm (Hilton El Capitan A) and Wednesday 10 October at 9:00am (Hilton Palisades).
Ordering, configuration, pricing and delivery information will be available at Emerson Exchange.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
