IXYS Completes Energy Efficiency Test Study

IXYS Corporation has released the results of a test study demonstrating a 50% reduction in IT energy consumption at its offices worldwide. The study was conducted in conjunction with Dhaani Systems, a Silicon Valley-based company, which deployed its proprietary network-based energy IT management platform at IXYS' various divisions, including IXYS Power, Zilog, IXYS IC Division, IXYS Germany and IXYS UK.

Energy-intensive computing, internet communications and IT servers are quickly becoming one of the fastest growing energy-use sectors. Since the demand for electricity is expected to outstrip low-cost supply, companies need to find ways to conserve and convert power efficiently. It is upon this thesis that IXYS Corporation has found success. Since its inception in 1983, IXYS has been developing technology-driven products to improve power conversion efficiency. Presently in the "world of IXYS", power semiconductors, analog ICs and MCUs are being deployed in IXYS solutions to generate, convert, distribute and use electrical energy at higher efficiencies.

"IXYS focuses on products that improve efficiency and save energy in the industrial, transportation, medical and communications applications; therefore, it only makes sense that IXYS would explore and adopt innovative cost-effective energy conservation efforts within its own organization, including solutions that apply advanced software," commented Uzi Sasson, President and CFO of IXYS. "Not only does IT equipment drain the power grid, it can also drain the pocketbook, with some studies suggesting IT equipment comprises 40% of the total monthly electricity costs. We recognized the potential for a significant reduction in the cost and amount of power consumed."

Initial tests of the Dhaani Star™ IT Energy Management Platform were executed at IXYS' subsidiary, Zilog Inc. Results indicated savings of up to 75%. In November 2011, IXYS decided to extend the program, deploying Dhaani Star at five of its divisions worldwide with savings of 50%. The rest of the divisions will adopt the platform in the coming year.

Opinion: Maximising Synergies between Power Electronics and ICT for improving Energy Efficiency

"The challenge for IT energy efficiency has always been execution without impacting day-to-day operations and employee productivity. This concern was immediately alleviated with a seamless deployment of Dhaani Star and the resultant reduced operating costs," commented Uzi Sasson, President and CFO of IXYS. "Due to the success of this pilot program, we envision using the Dhaani Star technology in some of our current smart building/smart metering applications with our Zilog based microcontrollers. We look forward to adding another level of energy efficiency to our smart power management products."

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
