New 12W Adapter-Style External LED Driver for OEM Lighting Applications
Phihong USA has developed a new external LED driver that is conveniently packaged as a low-cost, fixed-prong wall-plug adapter. Capable of producing up to 12W of output power, the PDA012A-S is available in constant current outputs of 350, 700, 1000 and 1500mA, and is ideal for home and small office lighting applications, such as floor lamps, table lamps and cabinet lighting.
"An external AC-DC adapter simplifies and accelerates the design cycle by removing all of the driver circuitry from the fixture," said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing for Phihong USA. "With UL and safety approvals on the external driver already completed, OEMs can move products to market much more quickly."
Designed for use in North America, Phihong's new, low profile, wall-plug adapter style LED driver has a nominal input range of 110-120VAC. Standard features include input over-current, output over-voltage, short-circuit and open-circuit protections, as well as power factor correction 0.9.

In addition to Level V efficiency compliance and a no-load power draw 300mW, the Class 2 constant current LED driver adapter is compliant with UL8750 and UL1310 and is rated IP20 for operation in dry, indoor environments with an ambient temperature range of 0°C to 40°C.
Each unit measures 71.5mm x 33.75mm x 46mm, weighs 85g, and features a 1.5-meter DC cord that is terminated with a 2.1mm x 5.5mm center positive barrel connector. Additional DC tips are available and may be changed, in-house, with no minimum order quantity. Pricing for the PDA012A-S starts at $13.91 in single unit quantities.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules
Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure
Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
