Phihong Introduces Adapter-Style LED Driver for Personal Lighting Applications

Phihong USA has developed a new, low-cost, fixed-prong, wall-plug adapter style LED driver capable of driving small arrays of LEDs, like those in personal lighting applications, at a constant current. Available in outputs of 350mA, 700mA, and 1000mA, the PDA006A-S adapter series is intended for use in a variety of personal lighting applications, including table lamps, desktop lamps, and reading lights.

"The advantage of using an external adapter to power a lighting fixture is that it cools the entire device, enabling better efficiency and safety so that users can get more life out of their products," said Keith Hopwood, vice president of marketing for Phihong USA. "Eliminating the driver circuitry also allows for more creative design processes, providing OEMs with more freedom when designing new lamps."

Designed for use in North American applications, the wall-plug adapter style LED drivers are compatible with a nominal input voltage range of 110 to 120VAC. Standard features include input over-current, output over-voltage, short-circuit, and open-circuit protections, as well as power factor correction 0.9. The PDA006A-S series also features a no-load power draw of 300mW, meets all of the requirements for Level V efficiency markings, and is designated as Class 2 per UL1310 and UL8750 safety guidelines.

Each unit measures 66.5mm x 31mm x 38mm, weighs just 40g, and is designed for use in dry, indoor environments with temperatures ranging from 0-40°C. The standard termination for the adapter's DC cord is a 2.1mm x 5.5mm center positive barrel connector; however, Phihong offers an in-house service to change DC tips with no minimum order quantity. Pricing for the PDA006A-S wall-plug adapter-style LED driver series starts at $8.66 in single unit quantities.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
