Surface-Mount Transformers for Industrial LANs Developed by Wurth and TI

Wurth Electronics Midcom Inc. introduces a tiny series of surface mount transformers developed with Texas Instruments to be used with the SN6501 Transformer Driver for Isolated Power Supplies. This new series enables tiny power supplies with very low part count to be developed for a host of applications up to 150mA of load current. In particular, the reference design is especially suited for CAN, RS232/422/485, SPI, I²C, and low-power LAN products used in industrial automation, process control and medical equipment.

The low-profile, surface-mount transformers from Wurth Electronics Midcom accommodates voltage levels ranging from 3V to 5.5V on both the input and the output. The transformers have a dielectric isolation rating of 2500VRMS for one minute, comply with various UL, EN and IEC safety standards, and satisfy functional insulation requirements for a primary circuit at a working voltage of 400VRMS. The body size of the transformer is roughly 7x7mm and 4mm tall.

The SN6501 is a monolithic oscillator/power-driver, specifically designed for small form factor, isolated power supplies in isolated interface applications. It drives a low-profile, center-tapped transformer primary from a 3V to 5.5V DC power supply. Wurth Electronics Midcom can also wind custom transformers to provide other isolated voltage based on application requirements.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
