Mitsubishi to Launch MOSFET-based Super-mini DIPIPM for 3-Phase Inverters

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will launch a transfer-mold-type, super-mini dual inline package intelligent power module (DIPIPM) primarily designed for use in inverter drive systems of small-capacity motors in refrigerators and other consumer appliances. The modules will incorporate 500V power MOSFETs and sales will begin on March 1. With optimized low-loss-drive ICs and a high-heat dissipation design, the module will help to reduce power consumption, advance miniaturization and lower the cost of inverter systems for small-capacity motor drive applications.

Reduced power consumption in small-capacity inverter systems is improved as a result of a 60% reduction in the on-resistance of the power switches compared to Mitsubishi Electric's existing "PS219B2" DIPIPM at 0.5A and 25 degrees C.; A reduction of recovered-power loss by optimizing the MOSFET process; And a reduction of IC power loss by optimizing the control IC.

Parts count in inverter systems is reduced as a result of the built-in bootstrap diode and current limiting resistor. Both the 3A/500V model PSM03S93E5/-A/-C and the 5A/500V model PSM05S93E5/-A/-C will begin shipping March 1st. Both devices include a full three-phase bridge incorporating 6 power MOSFETs as well as control and drive ICs. Additional features include, protection against short circuits, control power-supply undervoltage and over-heating (LVIC monitoring); and an error output. The DIPIPM package measures 24mm X 38mm X 3.5mm.

Energy Efficiency with Class D Amplifier Modules

Class-D switching amplifiers are helping audio designers create personal multimedia devices and home audio/visual systems that demonstrate how compact and stylish equipment can also deliver high sound quality and high audio output power. The key to this breakthrough, providing freedom from the large and bulky boxes housing traditional audio products, lies in the class-D amplifier’s high energy efficiency, which is typically around 90%. This allows designers to reduce or eliminate heatsinks as well as using smaller-sized PCBs and smaller components such as transformers, connectors and power supplies.

The Role of Hall Effect Sensors in Power Distribution Infrastructure

Power distribution units (PDUs) form an essential part of modern computing and data communications hardware. They provide multiple outputs for transferring electrical power with maximum efficiency, controlling the power capacity and safeguarding against the possible causes of supply interruption. With an ever increasing need from tech savvy consumers for higher data throughput and greater quantities of data storage capacity, as well as tough international legislation now governing CO&sub2; emissions, the demands being placed on these units are proving challenging for engineering teams to satisfy.
