HomePlug Marks another Milestone in Smart Grid Industry Endorsements

The HomePlug® Alliance announced today that the IEEE 1901 standard for powerline networking has been adopted in the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) Catalog of Standards. HomePlug AV is baseline technology for the IEEE 1901 standard, and more than 120 million HomePlug Certified devices have shipped worldwide.

In addition to HomePlug AV, HomePlug Green PHY™ technology is also interoperable as a certification profile of the IEEE 1901 standard. HomePlug previously announced the endorsement of Green PHY technology by major automotive manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Daimler Benz, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen for connectivity for plug-in electric vehicles.

The SGIP was established by the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2009, and HomePlug is one of the founding members of the organization. Previously, NIST included the Smart Energy Profile 2 (SEP2) for smart grid applications within the “NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards,” published in January 2010. In 2012, the HomePlug Alliance joined with the Wi-Fi® Alliance and ZigBee® Alliance to create the Consortium for Smart Energy Profile 2 Interoperability (CSEP) to create the interoperability testing programs for certification of SEP2 products.
