Plug-And-Play Bluetooth Smart® Modules

April 21, 2016 by Jeff Shepard

Avi-on Labs, Inc. today launched the Avi-on family of modules for lighting, switches, sensors, LED components and power supplies. Based on Bluetooth Smart and CSRmesh connectivity, a product of Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, Avi-on Modules combine with the Avi-on Software Platform to dramatically simplify the development of connected products.

"There is rapid innovation happening in connected lighting and 'smart' homes. These Modules offer a proven, plug-and-play solution, which includes software, radio and long-term support as a comprehensive package, thus allowing lighting manufacturers to commercialize products quickly," said Anthony Murray, Senior Vice President and General Manager, IoE, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd. "With CSRmesh and Avi-on Modules, customers are able to quickly design and build simple-to-install, connected products for home and commercial environments."

Avi-on Modules provide a single board solution for line-connected or battery-powered lighting and sensor controls. With a compact footprint and packaging, designed specifically for the LED and controls industry, the Modules are pre-loaded with custom firmware and dedicated output connectors for popular protocols, including: 0-10V, PWM, UART, I2C, SPI, ADC, TRIAC, and DALI. In many cases, integration is as simple as wiring an Avi-on module to the LED driver. Because all modules are FCC, CE, IC and BQB certified, certification time and fees are essentially eliminated. The pre-certified Avi-on modules cut 12 to 18 months from a normal development timeline and save up to $60,000 in engineering and radio certification fees per product.

"The Avi-on Platform + Modules Solution enables lighting manufacturers to gain market advantage and fill the compliance gap by rapidly integrating simple, low-cost, easy-to-use and energy-efficient controls into their existing products," said Eric Miller, CEO of Avi-on Labs, Inc. "Customers looking to comply with regulations like Energy Star 2.0 and California Title 24 can use our products to build entire lines of connected products in just a few months."

Each Avi-on Module runs natively on the Avi-on Software Controls Platform, a turnkey combination of mobile apps, a secure cloud, customized firmware and software support.

"The Avi-on platform is a great fit with our residential and commercial fixtures and drivers," said Adrian Cheng, CEO of Edison Opto USA Corporation. "The apps are easy to use and Avi-on takes care of long-term support. Partnering with Avi-on was a natural choice."
