Siliconix Releases New PowerPAK 1212-8 MOSFETs

July 23, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Intertechnology Inc.'s (Malvern, PA) Siliconix Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) has released several new power MOSFETs in a lead-less package type. The new PowerPAK 1212-8 power MOSFETs measure 3.3mm x 3.3mm x 1.07mm and are intended for use as power amplifier switches and load switches in cellular phones, pagers, PDAs and other portable electronic systems.

Siliconix reports that the new PowerPAK 1212-8 package is 11 percent thinner than a TSSOP-8 and provides an order of magnitude improvement in thermal conductivity, increasing current handling by 12 percent or more. Power-dissipation capability more than doubles, increasing from 1.75W to 3.8W, as compared to other devices with a TSSOP-8-size footprint or smaller.

Three single p-channel devices in the new package have been released, offering a choice of -12V (Si7405DN) or -20V (Si7401DN and SI7403DN) break-down voltages. On-resistance at a 4.5V gate drive is 16mohms for the Si7405DN, which can handle up to -13A of current. For applications requiring the additional headroom of a 20V break-down voltage combined with minimal conduction losses, the Si7401DN offers a maximum Rds(on) rating of 21mohms and a maximum current handling of -11A. For cost-sensitive applications where on-resistance is not as critical, the Si7403DN PowerPAK combines the same thermal capabilities of the Si7401DN and Si7405DN with a maximum Rds(on) of 100mohms.

Samples and production quantities of the Si7401DN, Si7403DN and Si7405DN are available now, with lead times of four to six weeks for larger orders. Pricing for US delivery in 100,000-piece quantities starts at $0.36.
