On September 4, 1997, the very last Ford Thunderbird rolled off the assembly line in Lorain, Ohio. Originally conceived as Ford's answer to the Corvette, the Thunderbird enjoyed an illustrious place among American cars. It was promoted as a "personal" car, rather than a sports car, so it never had to compete against the imports that dominated the sports car market.
