Recapping Developments in the Field of Power MOSFETs

Doug Bess

The past year witnessed significant new product releases, technological developments, and industry news related to the field of Power MOSFETs.

In October of last year, MagnaChip Semiconductor Corp. launched a series of 650V High Voltage (HV) MOSFET products for use in LCD-TV and LCD monitor applications.

The 650V MOSFET is used as a power conversion part for Switched-Mode Power Supplies where flyback topology is adopted. The main applications are typically LCD-TVs and LCD monitors which require high-speed switching. In mission critical situations, the use of power supplies which incorporate the 650V HV MOSFET is essential to securing a stable and regulated supply of power, particularly in countries which experience frequent power supply disruptions.

With the launch of our new series of 650V MOSFETs, MagnaChip Semiconductor says that it will be able to meet the growing customer demand for high voltage MOSFETs used in power supplies and other devices. This also broadens our portfolio of MOSFET products which will now range from 20V up to 650V devices.

Also in October, Summit Microelectronics expanded its family of programmable dc-dc products with the SMB220 and SMB221 integrated 10 and 20A buck regulators. These new products deliver what the company describes as unparalleled integration with built-in MOSFET’s, digital programmability and non-volatile configuration.

Like Summit’s entire programmable dc-dc family the SMB220 and SMB221 deliver advanced power management functions along with class-leading power regulation at an unbeatable bill-o-material cost. Many applications can benefit from the application of these products including Enterprise Servers and Storage Systems, Enterprise and Carrier Switches/Routers/BaseStations as well as emerging Consumer Digital Media (IP Digital Television and Set-Top Box).

In December, IXYS Corp. announced the launch of its latest generation of Q-Class products with the introduction of its new Q3-Class HiPerFET Power MOSFET family. Available with drain-to-source voltage ratings of 200V – 1000V and drain current ratings of 10A – 100A respectively, the devices provide the end customer with a broad selection range of power switching solutions that demonstrate exceptional power switching performance, enhanced device ruggedness, and high energy efficiency. The superior performance and energy savings of these new devices allow for the development of more energy efficient and reliable power subsystems in high-power, high-performance applications such as industrial switch-mode power supplies, dc-dc converters, power factor correction circuits, server and telecom power systems, solar inverters, arc welding, plasma cutting, battery chargers and induction heating.

The new Q3-Class is a direct result of advancing IXYS’ latest PolarHV technology platform to deliver to market power switching solutions that exhibit benchmark electrical and thermal characteristics. These devices feature an optimized combination of low on-state resistance (Rdson) and gate charge (Qg) resulting in a substantial reduction in the conduction and switching loss of the device. In addition, these devices have lower gate-to-drain charge and lower gate resistance, thereby reducing switching losses with faster switching, and lower gate drive power consumption.
