In March, Power-One, Inc. announced the availability of its newest high-efficiency, open frame 250W ac-dc power supplies for the medical industry, the MBC250 Series.

The IEC60601 3rd Edition approved MBC250 Series has a compact 3 x 5" package, and provides 250W of output power with up to 90% efficiency at 230Vac. With approval to Means of Patient Protection (MOPP), the MBC250 is suitable for use in body floating (BF) applications wherein equipment may come in direct contact with the patient, such as blood pressure monitors or ultrasound equipment. While ideally suited to Medical, the MBC250 can also be utilized in other high isolation or low leakage applications.

At the end of March, Cyntech Components has announced a family of compact 60W power supplies with full medical safety approvals that are typically up to 90% efficient and have no-load power consumption of less than 0.5W.

Power ratings are based on free air convection for operation at up to 50°C, eliminating the need for cooling fans in order to maximise reliability and minimise the space required within the system. The open frame units have an industry standard 2 x 4" footprint, universal ac input (90 – 264Vac) and come in a choice of single outputs at 5, 12, 15, 24 or 48Vdc. All models feature overvoltage and short circuit protection and leakage current is less than 0.1mA, as required for IEC60601-1 and EN60601-1 safety approvals.

In May, XP Power announced the CCB250 series of highly efficient single output 250W ac-dc power supplies aimed at a broad range of industrial and medical applications. With an operating efficiency of up to 95%, the convection cooled CCB250 series generates very little waste heat and does not require any forced air cooling. The series achieves an absolute minimum efficiency of 90% with a 90Vac input at full load.

Meeting the stringent demands of the latest IEC60601-1 3rd edition medical safety standards, the CCB250 complies with 2 x MOPP (Means Of Patient Protection) and offers the complete risk management files, thus removing the burden and expense typically placed on the end product designer in achieving product compliance. The series also complies with the requirements of BF (body floating) applications. For IT and industrial applications the range is approved to IEC60950-1.

In June, Protek Power released the PMP15M Series’ of ac-dc power supplies, which offer 15W of performance packed design and are compliant to UL60601-1 3rd Edition and TUV 60601-1 medical safety standards. Units are also RoHS compliant and meet the requirements of CEC and Energy Star Level V. This 15W Series is well suited for a variety of medical and dental applications, including patient vicinity medical devices.

The PMP15M Series’ accept a 90-264Vac universal input and is available with interchangeable input plugs which attach to the compact 3.08 x 2.04 x 1.35" body of the adapter. Models with fixed input blades are also available. Single output models have voltages ranging from 5 to 24Vdc, or modified voltage requests can be accommodated.

In July, AMETEK Programmable Power introduced the Sorensen ASD Series 40 and 60V precision programmable ac-dc power supplies. The Sorensen ASD’s water-cooled packaging allows it to provide up to 30kW of power in a 3U form factor, giving it what the company says is unrivaled power density for a power supply in this class. Being water cooled, it is well suited for precision programmable power applications with stringent air quality requirements such as clean rooms or industrial environments that are dirty or potentially corrosive and damaging to air-cooled power supplies.

The ASD DSP-based digital architecture, with real-time digital control and Graphical User Interface (GUI), enables advanced features for better control and monitoring of critical processes and applications.

For example, the optional advanced features package includes a built-in oscilloscope function for measurement and display of: power, voltage, current, output impedance, output cable impedance and output cable voltage drop. The ASD provides the ability to program different "fault levels," enabling detection of output cabling, connection or load problems before they cause critical system problems. The ASD can replace a system programmable logic device (PLC) by closing the loop on an external parameter such as temperature.
